Measurement of electrical resistance levels

Our laboratory is equipped to measure the electrical resistance of a filtration media.

Application

In certain spots, dust friction can lead to accumulation of electrostatic charges with a risk of sparking.

In the presence of flammable or explosive dust, it is thus essential to use an antistatic filtration media to enable the charges to be carried along the filtration bags and pockets.

Measurements

The electrical resistance of a filtration media is measured in accordance with standard DIN 54345, sections 1 and 5:

  • The surface resistance (RO) is measured locally using two concentric electrodes on the filtration side and the clean air side of the filtration media.
  • The resistance through the felt (RD) is measured locally using two cylindrical electrodes placed on each side of the felt.
  • The long-distance resistance (RST) is measured on 50 x 300 mm samples in the warp and weft directions of the filtration media.

Certification

Our filtration bags and pockets are tested and validated by approved organizations to ensure that they meet the directives of the ATEX standard.

Pilot filter - INERIS

To better characterize phenomena of electrostatic charge and discharge, TTL France has set up a partnership with INERIS, the reference organization in France, to build a pilot filter fitted with many different measurement instruments.

The following measurements can be made under dynamic conditions:

  • Measurement of the electrical voltages on filter bags, to determine the amounts of electrical energy accumulated,
  • Influence of the type of dust (depending on its resistivity),
  • Influence of the filtration speeds,
  • Influence of the thickness of the filtration cake.

The purpose of these studies is to provide, in full knowledge of the situation, the antistatic filtration media ideally suited to the operating conditions of the installation and the dust to be filtered.
