Testing seals with fluorescent powder

Leak detection powder: Principle

To validate installation of a new set of bags or pockets, or to locate any leaks if dust emission peaks are noted, it is advisable to carry out a test with fluorescent powder.

This test is carried out using fluorescein, a coloured, inert, non-toxic tracer that reacts to ultraviolet light (the choice of colour is important to obtain the sharpest possible contrast with the dust).

Carrying out the test

Inspecting the filter

  • Inspection of the filter on the clean air side prior to injecting the tracer.
  • Inspection of the bags via the hopper
  • Obstruction or removal of any perforated bags noted during this brief inspection.

Injecting the powder

  • Injection of the powder upstream from the filter, using suction, and creating sufficient turbulence to spread the powder evenly throughout the suction current.
  • Introduction of the optimum quantity of powder as compared with the filtration surface of the filter.

Detecting leaks

  • Opening the filter doors and using an ultraviolet lamp to inspect the clean air casing, the cleaning nozzles, the venturi and the tops of the bags.
  • The presence of coloured tracer shows that there is a leak. Traces of coloured powder can be seen around the zone where the leak is located.
  • The inspection using an ultraviolet lamp must be carried out in complete darkness. Any presence of light or sunlight affects the quality of detection.
